Social Media Influencers Driving Unofficial Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug
A shadow economy for unlicensed slimming drugs is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, according to new investigations.
Experimental Treatment Gaining Traction Online
The experimental drug, which is still in clinical trials, is being promoted by online personalities for its alleged weight-reducing properties. Viewers are encouraged to message these accounts directly for source information, while also receiving promotional offers.
Thriving Commerce on Social Networks
Additionally, a robust market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share comparison images, administration instructions and claims of rapid British shipping. Vendors market the substance there before redirecting buyers to other platforms for purchases.
Understanding Retatrutide
Retatrutide is an investigational injectable created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies suggest it could help individuals reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the successor to Ozempic.
Medical Experts Voice Worries
However, physicians and chemists have warned that the sale of what is still an unapproved drug in the UK is worrisome and could result in individuals injecting substances of unknown origin.
Some professionals stated the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing cost of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.
Legal Position and Enforcement
Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Several content creators try to sidestep the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted substance, but advertising and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer laws, risking penalties, legal action or prison.
Service Reaction and Content Elimination
Based on TikTok, the platform has removed problematic material and prohibited related hashtags and query recommendations. The company stated it was dedicated to keeping the service secure and allocating resources in enhancing enforcement strategies.
Online Marketplace Activities
Investigations also found groups with up to 9,000 members marketing retatrutide using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with numerous of users, filled with images of weight loss, positive reviews and detailed guides for preparing or administering at home.
After minutes of entering one group, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where most transactions occur. The seller sent an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the product was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a alleged testing documentation. Not one asked about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.
Item Details and Costs
Inside these groups, messages display black plastic packages with postal service stickers, stating to contain new batches. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at residence with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors typically sold at £160 for 20 milligrams. When asked how long a pen should last, vendors give contradictory answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.
Platform Moderation and Security Measures
A spokesperson for Telegram stated it regularly moderated harmful material on its service including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Cautions
“Individuals are injecting substances they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is valid, these online products may not contain what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in demand to current cost increases for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, patients are using online platforms. But counterfeit injections are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she explained.
Her team has previously seen individuals harmed by self-injection from unverified sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Position
A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any regulatory agency globally. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet authorized … may subject users to possibly serious medical dangers”.
