No fewer than thirteen individuals perish and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
