Crew Member Reveals Emotional Distress After Wave of Backlash Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose support pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.
She noted that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the experience, including increased focus on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from different industries.
The venture behind the mission is a private space firm founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
